Technicians and technical officers from private and public organisations who install and test wireless networking equipment or radio communications equipment apply the skills and knowledge in this unit.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to install and configure a wireless mesh network comprised of radio nodes organised in a mesh topology. Wireless mesh networks provide users with secure wireless roaming beyond traditional wireless local area network (LAN) boundaries and are readily deployed in areas that lack wired backhaul.

The mesh topology and ad-hoc routing give mesh networks stability, offer redundancy and have the ability to self form and self heal. Mesh networks enable local communities and those in remote areas to participate in a distributed shared network without the need for centralised management.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement but users should confirm requirements with the relevant federal, state or territory authority.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct observation of the candidate configuring wireless mesh routers

direct observation of the candidate installing wireless mesh nodes, access point nodes and gateway

direct observation of the candidate testing nodes for connectivity

oral or written questioning to assess required knowledge.

Access must be provided to appropriate learning and assessment support when required.

Assessment processes and techniques must be culturally appropriate, and appropriate to the oral communication skill level, and language and literacy capacity of the candidate and the work being performed.

In all cases where practical assessment is used it will be combined with targeted questioning to assess required knowledge. Questioning techniques should not require language, literacy and numeracy skills beyond those required in this unit of competency.

Remove waste from work site, dispose of according to environmental requirements and restore work area to customer's satisfaction
